Health service utilization in patients with major depression and co-morbid pain pdf
ملخص الدراسة:
Patients with depression often have co-morbid_x000D__x000D_
pain symptoms. However, rates of service utilization_x000D__x000D_
by psychiatric in-patients with co-morbid pain symptoms are unknown. The purpose of this study is to_x000D__x000D_
estimate whether patients with major depression and_x000D__x000D_
co-morbid pain access medical treatment for their_x000D__x000D_
pain as much as their counterparts with psychiatric_x000D__x000D_
diagnoses other than major depression._x000D__x000D_
Methods: A total of 103 patients (62 female; 41_x000D__x000D_
male) were assessed for a diagnosis of major depression applying a psychiatric clinical interview followed by a self-report pain questionnaire, which_x000D__x000D_
assessed physical pain in psychiatric patients._x000D__x000D_
Results: Patients with major depression reported_x000D__x000D_
higher rates of pain symptoms in the past 6 and_x000D__x000D_
12 months than their counterparts with a psychiatric_x000D__x000D_
diagnosis other than major depression. Analysis of_x000D__x000D_
variance showed that patients with depression were_x000D__x000D_
less likely to attend medical and specialist services_x000D__x000D_
for their pain symptoms than their counterparts. On_x000D__x000D_
the contrary, depressed patients with pain attended_x000D__x000D_
more frequently general in-patient services than nondepressed patients with pain._x000D__x000D_
Conclusions: Patients with depression suffer high_x000D__x000D_
rates of pain symptoms, but are at higher risk of not_x000D__x000D_
accessing appropriate services suggesting inadequate_x000D__x000D_
service utilization. The results have implications for_x000D__x000D_
screening and health care delivery for psychiatric_x000D__x000D_
patients with pain.
