Cost escalation is one of serious difficulties that_x000D__x000D_
facing the construction industry. The construction sector_x000D__x000D_
suffers from ever-increasing cost of raw materials,_x000D__x000D_
construction inputs and inflation in domestic and_x000D__x000D_
international markets. The aim of this paper is to identify_x000D__x000D_
factors affecting the cost escalation in construction projects in_x000D__x000D_
the Gaza Strip. This will help the contractors to create_x000D__x000D_
awareness so that timely remedial measures can be taken to_x000D__x000D_
mitigate the resulting problems. A total of 36 cost escalation_x000D__x000D_
factors related to project, supervisor, activity, owner, labour_x000D__x000D_
and equipment and materials were identified through_x000D__x000D_
extensive literature review which were supported by panel of_x000D__x000D_
experts and pilot study. A structured questionnaire was used_x000D__x000D_
to collect primary data. A total of 120 questionnaires were_x000D__x000D_
distributed randomly to owners, consultants and contractors_x000D__x000D_
working in the construction sector in the Gaza Strip to collect_x000D__x000D_
their views about the factors affecting cost escalation. The_x000D__x000D_
questionnaire was divided into two parts. The first part is_x000D__x000D_
general information and the second is factors affecting cost_x000D__x000D_
escalation. The results revealed that the cost of building_x000D__x000D_
materials, permits and approvals, the availability of an_x000D__x000D_
effective supervisory system, the improper cost estimate, the_x000D__x000D_
changes in project, the quality of work, the machinery and_x000D__x000D_
equipment required to carry out the tasks and activities_x000D__x000D_
required for the project completion are the most common_x000D__x000D_
factors leading to the cost escalation of construction projects_x000D__x000D_
in the Gaza Strip..
